Is There A Subsidy For Electric Bikes In India?
Electric
vehicles are the future of India. Even if it is less expensive than gasoline
vehicles, price is still a factor. In this situation, a government subsidy for
electric vehicles becomes critical for the smooth movement of the EV market in
India. And yes, there is a subsidy on Electric
Bikes and scooters and cars, but it varies state-wise.
As part of the FAME-II scheme, the Central Government
offers a variety of benefits. Aside from the FAME-II subsidy, each state has
several policies in place to ensure that the cost of electric two-wheelers is
decreased. When it comes to providing benefits for electric vehicles, each
state has its own set of rules.
Different states provide subsidies for electric
two-wheelers based on the size of the lithium-ion batteries. Delhi currently
receives the biggest subsidy, followed by Maharashtra.
State-wise subsidy on electric bikes and scooters:
1. Delhi
Consumers can get a subsidy of Rs 5,000/kWh of battery
capacity up to Rs 30,000 for e-bikes, as well as registration and road tax
exemption. Consumers who want to buy a four-wheeler can get a subsidy of Rs
10,000/kWh of battery capacity up to Rs 1.5 lakh, plus registration and road
tax deductions.
2. Maharashtra
Road taxas well as registration charges are
relinquished for all EVs. The first 1 lakh Electric Scooty buyers in
this state are eligible for a Rs 5,000/kWh of battery capacity incentive, with fa
cap amount of Rs 10,000. E-bikes that were purchased before December 31, 2021,
were granted an early bird bonus of up to Rs 15,000 (with a 3kWh battery).
3. Telangana
The EV policy was implemented in the state of
Telangana in 2020. All types of electric vehicles are eligible for a 100%
registration and road tax exemption. Subsidies, on the other hand, are not
being offered. The state administration is studying the reframed FAME scheme as
well as other states' programmes.
4. Karnataka
Apart from the FAME subsidy from the federal
government, Karnataka does not provide any direct incentives to electric
vehicle owners. However, this does not diminish Karnataka's importance in
comparison to the other states on this list. This is due to Karnataka's EV
policy, which provides subsidies and exemptions to EV manufacturers. Karnataka
has also exempted EVs from paying road tax and registration fees.
5. Andhra Pradesh
Andhra Pradesh, like Karnataka, does not provide any
direct subsidies to EV buyers. All eco-friendly automobiles registered in the
state, however, are exempted from paying road tax and registration fees.
6. Gujarat
Gujarat has the largest subsidy of all the states, at
Rs.10,000/kWh. The maximum subsidy available for purchasing an Electric Scooter is Rs.20,000. While the state government has not issued a road
tax exemption for electric vehicles, it has announced a registration fee
exemption.
7. Odisha
The government of Odisha has provided a 15% subsidy on
the purchase of electric automobiles (EVs). The subsidy for two-wheelers is 15%
of the vehicle's cost, up to a maximum of Rs 5,000.
8. Meghalaya
At Rs.10,000 per kWh, Meghalaya has the highest
subsidy of all the states. A maximum subsidy of Rs.20,000 is provided for the
purchase of an Electric Scooty.
These vehicles are also exempted from paying registration charges and road tax.

Final takeaway:
State-specific electric vehicle policies are implemented for a period of four to five years from the date of notice and can only be used to subsidise a limited number of electric vehicles including scooters. Most Indian states have decided to allocate subsidies for electric two-wheelers based on the size of their lithium-ion battery packs. The incentive is computed on the basis of 'per kWh of battery capacity.'
